American Legion Post 597 was chartered March 15, 1947. Located in Historic Downtown Carrollton, Texas, with a membership upwards of three hundred Legionnaires (Veterans/current Military). In addition, American Legion Post 597 partners with affiliated organizations including American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, and the American Legion Riders. The Post is one of the largest and fastest growing American Legion Posts in North Texas and serves a large community in Dallas and Denton counties.  Each year, we support various Veteran and Community programs and projects including, but not limited to, Boys and Girls State, Patriot Paws, K9 Warriors, Sweats for Vets, Christmas for Kids (gifts for local children in need), Operation Purple Camp, Cancer Research, Dallas Life Homeless Shelter, Thanksgiving Soup Kitchen, Valor Ranch, Post 597 building fund, and other organizations that are in place to aid Veterans, their families and the community.  Through its members, Post 597 pledges itself “to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and principles of true Americanism, for the common welfare of the living and the solemn commemoration of those who died, that Liberty might not perish from the Earth.”

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans,  servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at nearly 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.  The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Needs

Raising money for the following...

1. Building Repairs - The American Legion Post 597 building is a place for Veterans and community-minded individuals to work on projects benefiting other Veterans and the overall community. This building is also where the American Legion Post #597, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 597, Sons of the American Legion 597, and American Legion Riders 597 gather for meetings, provide services to Veterans, and host community events. The building is over 80 years old and currently in desperate need of repairs to the ceiling, floors, and bathroom. Those repairs will allow us to have a fully functional and enjoyable place to continue these activities.

2. Supply under-privileged elementary school age children with Christmas gifts they would otherwise not have. These include toys, clothes, shoes, etc.

3. Sending boys and girls to Boys and Girls State and High School Oratorical competition. Many scholarships up for grabs.

Equity Statement

The 597 family welcomes people from various backgrounds — different races, nationalities, religions, socio-economic groups, physical abilities, age groups, cultures — you name it — to unite under the common mission of honoring and helping our veterans, military, and their families, and fostering patriotism and civics among our youth. We are looking for community partners like you to help us continue this mission.
