Widowed Persons Service of Tarrant County is unique among grief support organizations.  We do not address general grief situations but, rather, focus soley on the grief associated with the death of a spouse.  We serve Tarrant County and the surrounding areas and have been active here since 1979.  This year we are hosting seven (7) five-week Grief Support sessions spread throughout various parts of the community: 1 in Burleson at First Baptist Church, 1 at St John Lutheran Church in Mansfield, 2 at Pleasantview Baptist Church in Arlington, 1 at Genesis United Methodist Church in Ft Worth, and 2 at University Christian Church in Ft Worth. We also provide addition Grief Support sessions during the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's holiday season, which can be especially difficult for the newly widowed.  We are all seeking and struggling to build a future for ourselves, but we are committed to building that future together as we reach out to each other, share the pain as well as the joy, share the anger as well as the peace, share the faith as well as the doubts, and help each other grieve as well as grow.  We don't charge for membership or attendance at our Grief Support sessions.  Everyone serving in our organization is a volunteer.

We need not walk alone. The transition from identifying yourself as a spouse, widower, widow, a survivor, and finally a single person is a difficult journey. Being single now is not the same as "then." Both you and the world are different. Nothing can undo the death that leaves us single. There is little consolation in knowing that "my life is still my responsibility." We are the "village" that helps each other through this journey of grief. We have a monthly Newsletter that is sent to the widowed who want to receive it. We provide safe activities such as breakfasts, lunches, dinners, games, dances and other activities where everyone should be able to find fun and friendship somewhere.

Our Needs

We depend on community support in the form of memorials, donations and the fundraisers we have each year.  We need funds for the books and supplies for Grief Support sessions as well as to maintain our office operations.  We mail/email approximately 1,000 newsletters each month to member widows and widowers.  Our office at 2906 SE Loop 820, Suite A, Fort Worth, TX, is open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday and staffed by volunteers.  In November of each year we have a Candlelight Remembrance Service to honor those we have lost as well as a special holiday related Grief Support session to address the often difficult issue of how to navigate the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's holiday season.  We would like to be able to continue this support to the generations that follow us.

Mission

To aid bereaved men and women of all ages regardless of race, creed, and/or economic status to adjust more effectively to the loss of a spouse through death and to build a new life.

Widowed Persons Service of Tarrant County is a Grief Support program for currently widowed persons. Although we are trained in Grief Counseling, we are not professional counselors. We are widows and widowers helping each other.

Needs

Widowed Persons Service of Tarrant County depends entirely on donations and memorials to enable our work for the community. We maintain an office as a base from which to provide services, publish our monthly Newsletter, hold training sessions for our Grief Support session facilitators, and occasionally hold Grief Support sessions when other venues are unavailable.
