Luke's Story

In 2014, the Lange family heard the words no parent, sister, or child should ever have to hear, "Luke has cancer." At nine years old, Luke began his fight with his family at his side. Like many cancer patients, Luke courageously endured countless clinic visits, hospital stays, and chemotherapy infusions.

Early during Luke's treatment, he told his parents he could fight this battle, but he could not endure another day in the hospital gown. It made him feel sicker, and he just wanted to feel like a "normal" kid. Luke and his mom, Tracy, began brainstorming a solution while maintaining the functionality and purpose of a hospital gown. Small plastic snap strips were added to each side of his shirt to allow easy access to his port, promote normalization and allow Luke to continue to be a kid both in and out of the hospital. Thanks to simple alterations, Luke could ditch the faded grey, dress-like, open-back gown and continue wearing all his favorite shirts. Other patients immediately began asking about his snap shirts, which is how Luke's FastBreaks began.
We are thrilled to say that today, Luke is cancer-free! When Luke went into remission, he wanted to share his shirts with other patients, help them feel normal, and replace the dreaded hospital gown. Luke's FastBreaks received 501(c)3 status in 2016 and has served over 70 pediatric hospitals and six countries!

Mission

Luke's FastBreaks supports children, adolescents, and young adults diagnosed with cancer. We strive to promote normalcy and restore dignity during treatment by replacing the hospital gown with our unique Medical Port Shirts.

Needs

No patient, hospital, or family pays for our medical port shirts, blanket, or socks. However, we now require a shipping and handling fee for each package. Unfortunately, we always need funding due to the rising number of patients. Cancer knows no bounds, and kids cannot fight alone.

Since 2020, we have purchased more medical port shirts than ever before. Today, we offer six medical port shirts with various designs that kids of all ages love to wear instead of their hospital gowns. LFB also includes a custom #BeStrong blanket and multi-colored socks in the care package!

Luke's FastBreaks has shipped over 50k medical port shirts and 7500 care packages to children with cancer all over the United States. As you can see, we are growing faster than expected, and we know our port shirts make a difference in the patients' lives!

Thank you for believing in our mission and giving generously. We could not do it without you. Stay Safe, Be Strong, and God Bless!
