Help Us Tell Queer Stories! Our campaign will provide funding for our 2024 production of La Maupin. Coming July 2024!

Plot: La Maupin is a tale of love and tragedy set in 18th century France all wrapped up in a high octane Punk Rock Vanity Fair package. Based on the true story of Julie D’Aubigny, bisexual duelist and opera singer who was famous for dueling men and wooing their women. Through a beautiful mix of sword fighting and dance, the show details her almost too incredible to believe exploits (like the time she burned down a nunnery to escape with her lover, or the time she fought 3 men at once- and won!) While exploring the Julie’s journey to find happiness and acceptance as a queer woman way ahead of her time.

Thanks to our 2021-2022 sponsors, Prism Movement Theater had the capital to continue to serve our community, even when the rest of the arts world was shut down. We produced the work Everything Will Be Fine, an award-winning, COVID-safe, drive-in show that toured through downtown Dallas, Pleasant Grove, and Fort Worth.Since 2012, Prism has written and produced 13 original wordless productions. We've collaborated and coproduced with several local theaters on pieces, such as Theatre Three, Cara Mia, Water Tower Theater, and Dallas Children's Theater. In 2017 and 2019, we were able to provide FREE high quality performances for underserved neighborhoods. During this time, Prism was able to serve over 1000 Dallas citizens and countless more through free workshops and performances! Additionally, Prism's movement work can be seen all over the DFW metroplex, as our members are responsible for choreographing a wide range of the movement arts for theaters like Cara Mia, Dallas Theater Center, Cry Havoc, WaterTower Theatre, Stage West, Dallas Children's Theater, Theatre Three, and the Dallas Opera. In 2022, we received national recognition and were profiled in the New York Times, as well as statewide in Arts and Culture Texas. In a year where COVID safe live performing arts were almost non-existent, Prism served over 1,500 D-FW citizens with one show alone.

Our 2024 season is full of equally ambitious projects that are designed to serve our community by highlighting diverse voices and stories. With our busy calendar of workshops, community classes, and live productions, we are poised to serve an even wider audience in Dallas than ever, including Oak Cliff, Webb Chapel, and Pleasant Grove. In the past year we have grown our team to include 60% women, 50% ethnic minorities, and have LGBTQIA+ voices represented on our staff.  We are working with a marketing agency, Pearl Creative Consulting, to boost our brand awareness and reach, a human resources manager, to ensure we are producing work that serves all voices, and a new casting director to expand our talent pool.

These changes are bringing exciting opportunities for growth that we hope you will be a part of.

Mission

We are storytellers who create ensemble-based, physical productions that embody the intersection between movement and dance to represent our diverse community, offer educational opportunities, and empower all voices.

Purpose:

Prism Movement Theater is an award winning company that tells stories that are inclusive, diverse and affordable to experience, through performance education and community outreach. Prism Movement Theater believes in storytelling through movement. Whether that be through dance, stage combat, mime, weight sharing, clowning, or simple everyday actions, we believe each motion is a piece of text. With this philosophy, we believe we can reach beautiful heights without uttering a single word.

Needs

Our Needs

Proceeds from this campaign will go directly toward making our production of La Maupin a reality. Ensuring that the production is as high quality as possible while helping to ensure that the artists are paid equitably for their time, talent, and knowledge.

Equity Statement

Prism Movement Theater's greatest focus is in our storytelling. We believe that by telling culturally specific stories and casting diversely and inclusively we can broaden our audience's exposure to representation, empathy and understanding. We create and connect these stories to grow our local community of talent and audiences, – removing the barriers of language, device, ability or connectivity. Better representation onstage starts with representation in the office. Our work has to be internal first, so it can impact what we do externally. We believe we’ll do that better if our employees come from different backgrounds, and if we create an environment of inclusion and belonging for them.
