Founded in Dallas, TX in 2014 by Mara Richards Bim, Cry Havoc Theater Company’s body of work includes fourteen original works. In 2019, the teen company was named “Best Thing to Happen to Local Theater” by D Magazine and received three D-FW Theater Critics Forum Awards for their production of Crossing the Line including Best New Play or Musical, Best Performance by an Ensemble, and Best Directors. In 2018, Cry Havoc’s production of Babel received two Forum Awards including best new play. In 2018, the company was awarded Theatre for Young Audiences/USA’s National Community Impact Award, presented at the Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices Festival. In 2020, KERA and NPR released a five-episode podcast about the company’s 2018 production of Babel. In September 2021, Cry Havoc’s founder was named to D Magazine’s list of “Women Changing the Face of Dallas.”
Cry Havoc Theater Company will soon begin the process of sunsetting. When Cry Havoc was launched in the fall of 2014, Mara intended to devote a season of her life to it before embarking on other endeavors. The hope was that Cry Havoc would inspire young artists to embrace devised theatre as a way to create important conversations within the community and would be something they would carry with them long after leaving the organization. The hope was that Dallas audiences would be challenged to see art created by young people in a whole new light. We are immensely proud of the work the many professional and teen artists of Cry Havoc have accomplished over the last 8 years. We have exceeded all hopes and expectations, we have opened minds and hearts in Dallas and beyond, and we have raised the bar nationally for what youth theatre can look like. It has been a very beautiful season.
Mission
Cry Havoc Theater Company's vision is a more empathic and equitable world. Cry Havoc's mission is: Creating art that amplifies the voices of young people and serves as a conduit for community dialogue.
Cry Havoc is a youth arts organization that makes high quality theater education accessible to all no matter their socioeconomic barriers. Under the guidance of professionals, youth help devise original plays that engage diverse communities on complex political and social issues, encouraging dialogue and understanding of multiple perspectives. Cry Havoc has three goals: 1. Prepare youth for adulthood through mature storytelling. 2. Engage the community in meaningful conversations around important social and political issues, and 3. Add new works to the repertoire of Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) literature.
Needs
While our organization may be closing its doors in 2023, we do have one show left to produce and we absolutely still need your help.
Endlings, directed by Mara Richards Bim, explores climate grief and our connection to the natural world. As you may recall, in the spring of 2020, as the pandemic raged, the Mara led the teens in conducting virtual interviews with indigenous peoples, climate scientists, and climate activists on humanity’s relationship to the natural world. Endlings, was released as a radio play, but has never been produced live. In partnership with Dallas Children’s Theater, we will embrace the opportunity to rework, to rewrite, and to finally present Endlings live in February 2023 as Cry Havoc’s last show
Cry Havoc Theater Company operates on the belief that theatre is for everyone regardless of financial means. Our teens are cast based on talent alone and are never required to pay money in order to participate. In fact, we pay our teens a stipend, provide meals and dart passes, and pay their travel expenses.
Money raised on North Texas Giving Day will help us to support our teens as we mount our final production.
