OUR STORY

The idea for Loop 15 Texas was born on a bike ride, but the motivation came from common, painful experiences. Darren McHenry and Robert Rose are avid cyclists who have both been struck by cars while riding on the road.

While Robert was uninjured, Darren was not as lucky and suffered injuries. These incidents solidified their commitment to creating safer, connected alternatives for cyclists in the DFW Metro area. In 2023 alone, there were 2,604 traffic crashes involving bicyclists in Texas. This number reflects a trend of increasing risk for cyclists, as bicycle related fatalities in the state rose by 58% between 2019 and 2023.We believe more people will choose to ride, walk, jog and stroll outdoors if they had a safe way to do so.

Many of the existing trails in our area are disconnected "trails to nowhere," making them impractical for transportation or long-distance recreation. We saw an opportunity to change this by creating a network that connects communities. Our initial research into shared-use paths and funding sources led us to the North Central Texas Council of Governments and its VeloWeb plan, which seeks to create a connected Metroplex wide trail system. We knew we could build on their momentum to create a comprehensive plan. Loop 15 Texas is our bold plan to make that a reality. Loop 15 Texas received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2025.
