Chautauqua Preservation Society

A nonprofit organization

The Waxahachie Chautauqua event brings back the memory of this important movement in US history (1874-present) and the cultural impact on the region. It helps with our on-going research into the Chautauqua Movement in Texas (1880-1930) and the influence these chautauquaus had on communities. Our event also gives attention to Waxahachie's Chautauqua Auditorium - an octagonal, open-air structure built in 1902 and the last remaining structure in Texas from the Chautauqua Movement.

Our Needs

Current needs are funding to underwrite programs and equipment rentals that includes a day of educational and cultural programs in the historic Waxahachie Chautauqua Auditorium and surrounding Getzendaner Memorial Park on Sept. 25, 2021. This event is being offered FREE to the community. For 2021, this day has the theme of "Celebrating Native American Indians." The 2021 program chair and co-chair are both of Native American heritage and are organizing and directing this event. The organization has no paid staff and events are organized and produced by volunteers.
