Founded in 1969 in Hurst, TX, AAUW-Northeast Tarrant County Branch continues its rich 54-year tradition of advancing equity for women through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
NETC Branch is one of more than 1,000 local branches of the nonprofit nonpartisan organization formerly known as the American Association of University Women, of which 27 branches and 3 university chapters are part of AAUW Texas. AAUW welcomes anyone with an associate's degree or higher to join the local branch.
NETC Branch continues to be awarded AAUW's coveted 5-Star recognition status for aligning its work with the AAUW Strategic Plan, meeting criteria in the areas of advancement, membership recruitment and retention, public policy, governance, diversity, and programming.
Members meet monthly to hear speakers on issues affecting women and girls. Interest groups engage members in smaller-group activities, such as book review discussions, movies, mix & mingle, bridge, and "Confetti", a potpourri of offerings (such as wine-tasting, a dinner theater, or escape room adventure) for members with busy schedules who prefer flexibility.
In 2023-24, the branch's philanthropic efforts provided the following educational opportunities for women and girls:
* In spring 2023, the branch financially sponsored 3 local female university student leaders (from Texas Wesleyan University, Texas Woman's University and Mississippi State University) to attend AAUW's National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), held at the University of Maryland, College Park, to enhance their leadership skills and learn about pressing issues affecting women. In 2021, the branch sponsored 10 local female university students to participate in NCCWSL, held virtually.
* In spring 2023, NETC Branch awarded six (6) $1,000 college scholarships to 6 female graduates of Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD's KEYS High School, Trinity High School and L.D. Bell High School. Through 2022, 65 local female students attending KEYS High School, Trinity and Bell High Schools, along with mature students at Tarrant County College, have been awarded branch scholarships to go to college.
* In 2023 the branch awarded two (2) $1,000 scholarships to first year female dental hygiene students at Tarrant County College, plus funds for their dental kits; , in a partnership with Tarrant County College Foundation, the Foundation matches the branch award for the student's second year.
* As the first Adopt-A-School organization for HEBISD's KEYS High School, members provided a appreciation brunch for faculty and staff.
Previous projects benefitting women and girls:
* In January 2019, the branch launched AAUW's first Texas Work Smart salary negotiation skills workshop at the North Richland Hills Library.
* At our November 9, 2019 "Full STEAM Ahead" event, 100+ HEBISD 4-6th grade girls experienced fun interactive sessions about science and the arts.
* Since its inception in 1969, AAUW-NETC Branch members raised $70,000 to create two national AAUW Research and Project Endowments, named for local member Diane Jacoby and branch founder Georgia Kidwell, respectively. Investment income from these funds has continued to provide national scholarships awarded to women around the country completing graduate studies or career-related education programs.
Our Needs
We invite the community to support us in advancing gender equity. Donations will support additional college scholarships for female graduates of KEYS High School and for first year female TCC Dental Hygiene students, and enable more local female university students to attend AAUW's annual National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL). Donations will also support AAUW's Greatest Needs Fund and branch operations.
