New Hope Equine Assisted Therapy is a PATH, INTL. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Int'l) center serving the needs of people with a wide variety of special needs. We combine traditional instruction in balanced seat horseback riding with concepts of physical, occupational, speech, and social & emotional therapies to improve riders in the following areas: Physical, Developmental, and Social & Emotional. Physical- improves core strength, muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination, stamina, endurance, and relaxation; stretches spastic muscles, increases range of motion, and promotes sensory integration. Developmental- improves motor planning and problem-solving skills, bolsters ability to follow directions, and helps hand-eye coordination. Social & Emotional- improves self-esteem, self-confidence, sense of well-being, patience, and self-discipline; increases emotional control, and develops courage. Our horses are typically donated or adopted for use by our participants, who learn to care for their horse and tack as well as learning to ride. They enjoy our sensory trail where they can interact with many different learning activities while on horseback, which can improve their balance and core strength while using commands to direct the horse. Also, they discuss and describe objects that are associated with each activity.

Mission

New Hope was founded in 2012 by Dave and Sharla Kershen in order to foster a program encouraging the horse and human connection for the benefit of both horse and rider but specifically for those with disabilities. At New Hope Equine Assisted Therapy, we provide therapeutic horseback riding services for people with a variety of disabilities, special needs, and challenges. We strive to bring hope, healing and happiness to all those that participate in our programs, including the newly launched program for veterans and first reponders, Horses Helping Heroes.

Needs

We depend on donations of all sizes for our day to day operations: feeding and veterinary care for the horses, maintaining the facility, as well as caring for the other therapy animals, such as goats and a pig. We use donations to offset the cost of riding for our clients, as many are financially challenged to pay the true cost of a lesson which runs about $127 per ride.

We are seeking larger donations and grants to help expand the facility and add more horses so we can serve more riders. Capital funds for a barn, $50,000 as well as a land purchase, $120,000 - $1,000,000 will allow us to provide more services by increasing our space and horse herd.
